Mark Brotherhood

Mark Brotherhood created and writes Ludwig, and is also an executive producer. Big Talk Studios’ announcement of 13 August 2024 names those roles for the first six hour-long episodes.

Creating the series

The first-series announcement places Brotherhood’s writing alongside directors Robert McKillop and Jill Robertson and producer Georgie Fallon. Those are separate production credits: the writer supplies the scripts, while the published announcement identifies the colleagues responsible for directing and producing the series. For a viewer following the programme’s construction, the useful starting point is that Brotherhood’s name connects the individual murder cases with the continuing story of the missing detective. The dated Big Talk announcement provides the credited team without revealing the case solutions.

Writing the second series

Big Talk’s 15 April 2026 update confirms another six hour-long episodes written by Brotherhood. George Kane directs episodes one to three and Stella Corradi episodes four to six, with Fallon producing and Anya Wilson co-producing. The change of directors makes the distinction between writing and directing easy to follow: Brotherhood remains the writing connection across both halves of the new run. How he describes Ludwig

In a Radio Times interview published on 20 July 2026, Brotherhood describes the core appeal as an “eccentric outsider solves puzzles”. He explains John’s habit of turning crimes into puzzles and discusses keeping the missing-brother story alongside the individual investigations. His short description is a useful way into the series: viewers can enjoy the structure of one case while continuing to follow John and Lucy’s larger question. It is a description of the programme’s approach, rather than a clue to the identity of a future culprit.

The Christmas special and Series 3

The 8 July 2026 commission announcement confirms Brotherhood returning as writer, creator and executive producer for Series 3, again with six hour-long episodes. Chris Foggin is named as lead director. The 2 September Christmas announcement also credits Brotherhood with the separate festive episode, directed by Foggin and produced by Fallon. These announcements identify the creative continuity without supplying unannounced episode dates, individual Series 3 cases or an ending for the Christmas mystery.

Earlier work: The Trouble with Maggie Cole

Before Ludwig, Brotherhood created and wrote the project announced as Glass Houses. Televisual’s 1 March 2019 commission report describes a six-part ITV comedy drama led by Dawn French and also names Brotherhood as an executive producer. Production was planned in South Devon that spring. The original commission title is worth recognising when reading older coverage: it refers to the project that viewers later encountered as The Trouble with Maggie Cole, rather than a second unrelated series with a similar team.

WOUB’s 12 October 2020 broadcast announcement uses the final title and credits Brotherhood as creator and writer, with Ben Gregor directing. It names Dawn French, Mark Heap and Julie Hesmondhalgh among the cast and identifies Shameless UK as another Brotherhood credit. For a Ludwig viewer interested in his earlier work, that gives a published route beyond the puzzle detective. The connection is the credited writer, not a suggestion that the two programmes share characters or take place in the same fictional world.
